Accutane: A History of Serious Side Effects

The prescription medication Accutane (also known as Isotretinoin) was approved by the FDA in 1982 to treat severe cases of acne that did not respond to traditional treatments or antibiotics. The FDA concluded that Accutane was uniquely effective in helping patients with recalcitrant nodular acne, a skin condition that can be painful and often leaves deep facial scars, according to the FDA website. The medication had been shown to cure outbreaks for up to five months.

However, after it received the FDA's approval, this synthetic form of vitamin A was linked with serious side effects, leading to its recall on June 26, 2009. Birth defects were among the most serious side effects for pregnant women who had used the medication. Following extensive meetings in 2000, the FDA concluded that Accutane should not be taken by pregnant women, and that women using the medication and trying to get pregnant should discontinue use.

If you have used Accutane and experienced side effects related to childbirth, you may be entitled to money for medical bills and other expenses related to your child's injuries as well as compensation for your pain and suffering.

Other Adverse Effects

An FDA advisory committee also expressed concern about the potential for adverse psychiatric events in patients who used Accutane, including depression and suicide. The medication also has been linked to Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, compromised hearing, vision problems, liver damage, kidney damage and heart problems.

As a means of informing the public, the FDA has established a national registry that lists patients who were prescribed Accutane.
