More than 400 people including 300 law enforcement officers packed the Marriott at Boca Center on June 4th for the Dori Slosberg Foundation's Annual "Staying Alive on 95 & Florida's Roadways" event. This program was designed to honor law enforcement and educate the public about the dangers on our roadways. The Dori Slosberg Foundation is working to create solutions to the problems as a partner of the participating agencies.
The guest speakers included the CEO of the Dori Slosberg Foundation, Former Representative Irv Slosberg, Palm Beach County Commissioners Burt Aaronson and Steve Abrams, State Attorney Michael McAuliffe, DOT Secretary Jim Wolfe, Vice President of the Geico Insurance Company George Rogers and Bob Gordon, Partner in the Gordon & Doner Law Firm. The guest speakers also included family members of those lost to car crashes and representatives from Enterprise Rent A Car, St. Marys and Delray Medical Centers and Keiser University. Also included in the evening which honored law enforcement for keeping us safe on the roads was FHP Chief Miguel Guzman who gave tribute to fallen Trooper Ambroise, Chief Gauger and Captain Kenny from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Ann Gannon, the Palm Beach County Tax Collector, and a special guest appearance from the Geico Gecko!
The program which began on June 4 continued with entertainment provided by Michael Biggs and the Olympic Heights High School Quartet dinner and was followed by the enforcement effort which extended from Miami Dade County through Jacksonville . There were 1265 citations written as a result of the 48 hour police saturation in South Florida alone. The citations issued across the state of Florida included speeding violations, DUI, safety belt violations, reckless driving, suspended or revoked license, uninsured motorist and under 21 violations.
The Florida Department of Transportation has just released the most recent statistics and Florida is down 24% in teen driving and passenger fatalities to date. The Dori Slosberg Foundation is encouraged by these statistics and will continue our safe teen driving programs, video conferences and seat belt compliance contests across the state.
