A Closer Look at the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Knee Replacement

The NexGen Complete Knee Solution Cruciate Retaining Knee (CR) is a synthetic knee replacement device created by Zimmer Holdings, based in Warsaw, Indiana. Traditional knee implants are bonded to the thigh bone with adhesive, but many doctors prefer to avoid adhesives because cement can break down and cause the device to fail. The CR-Flex device is made of a porous fiber metal and a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy and is not attached using cement. Instead, it is used to cap the thigh bone where it connects to the tibia bone at the knee. The device, which is often used for first-time knee replacement patients who still have good bone stock and joint stability, is designed to provide a greater range of motion than traditional implants.

Knee replacements typically last around 15 years, but research suggests that the CR-Flex is prone to failure in three years or less.

Research presented at an American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons conference last March indicated that 36% of patients studied who had the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component showed signs of knee loosening after just two years.

The study also indicated that the device failed in 9% of the patients.Dr. Richard Berger, a surgeon with Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, initially acted as a consultant to Zimmer.  However, in 2006, Dr. Berger reported to Zimmer that some of his patients required additional replacements surgeries after the device failed to work – and in 2007, he stopped using the CR-Flex device.  Zimmer ended its consulting relationship with Dr. Berger following his criticism of the knee replacement device.
